My Thoughts: ☆☆☆

After my five star review of The Raven Boys, I was really hoping for a bit more out of the sequel. don’t get me wrong! The Dream Thieves is an AMAZING read, and I WILL be finishing the series, but I still ended up giving it three stars. Let’s analyze my reasoning and see what y’all think!

The Writing:

The writing of The Dream thieves is honestly what sealed the deal on that three star rating for me. The writing of The Raven Boys was tight! There was NO confusion about who was narrating at any given time, even though there were up to five points of view being shown. Every single word counted for something, and at NO point were you left wondering exactly why you just spent 30 minutes of your day reading that chapter. The Dream Thieves didn’t seem to have that tight writing style. It stays true to the characters and the series, but sometimes it almost became more like a decoration and less like a perfectly worded masterpiece. All the metaphors and descriptions are still beautiful and amazing and wonderfully full of things for me to learn from, but I did find myself flipping back a page a few times to see who was narrating. I guess the easiest way to describe the writing is that it had a dream-like quality, (pun totally intended), but I think that was meant to contribute to the plot of the story because so much of it took place in dreams. Oh don’t cringe over it taking place in dreams! These were dream scenes done right!

The Characters:

Oh my gosh the characters! Yeah… I thought I was over my fangirl stage, but no… These characters are just too amazing to be real! Oh wait… They’re not real… They’re just little bits of story! But if you’re a bookworm of any kind you will excuse my sleep deprived brain and know exactly what I mean! These characters are the kind of characters who seem like they should just come out of the pages and be real! And those character arcs…

Blue: Blue is undergoing a transformation, and I LIKE IT! She kind of had these preconceived judgements of people who I will not name at the beginning of the series, and I can see them slowly slipping away.

Gansey: Like I said before, I do not particularly care for Gansey’s character. It’s not because his character is badly written, but because of his personality, and I think that maybe he’s one of those characters that readers are supposed to love/hate until something major happens to make them drop everything and love them. Shatter Me ringing any bells for anyone??? anyway… I can kinda see him slipping a little into somebody I can’t help but love, especially in his interactions with other characters. He reeeeeally cares for Ronan and Adam and now Blue, and it is SO sweet when that shows through.

Ronan: Ok… Y’all know about my love for Ronan if you read my review of book 1, and that love didn’t lessen any after reading The Dream Thieves. In The Raven Boys, Ronan didn’t get much time at the mic, but his story really starts to show through in The Dream Thieves. We still have that multiPOV thing going on, but there’s a definite focus on Ronan. There were a few times where I kinda questioned whether certain things were true to his character, but for the most part I LOVED it! He went through a MAJOR transformation and admitted some stuff to himself and his friends that kinda shocked me, but now that it’s out I kinda feel stupid for not seeing it earlier… Let’s see if you can guess what it is!

Adam: Can someone please just pick Adam up and put his heart back together because oh my gosh! I almost cried a couple times! And I can’t even tell you why cause spoilers!!!

Noah: Noah didn’t get a whole lot of focus in this book, but he is definitely undergoing a transformation of his own, and I don’t know if it’s a good one or not. It makes sense for his character, but I have a feeling that it’s really going to destroy my little bookworm heart when he reaches the end of it.

Mr. Gray: Yeah! We have a new character! He gets some mic time, and he is quite intriguing! But he hurt Ronan so I hate him a little!!!

The Plot:

The plot structure was VERY tight, and there was no slow spot at the beginning like there was in book 1. It jumped right into the story, although the first chapter was a little metaphorical. I do think it worked for the opening though, and it definitely fits Ronan’s character. The Dream Thieves continued the trend of weaving the individual story of each character into the bigger picture, and it was done extremely well! I love watching all the stories intertwine and connect and fall into place like puzzle pieces right where I wasn’t expecting them to join. They’re woven so tightly together that you can’t have one story without the other without the plot falling flat somewhere. And the ending? The ending was a TOTAL cliff hanger that I will NOT spoil, but somebody goes missing… I feel like that should be followed by epic music but there is none…

In Short:

You’re probably all wishing I’d get to the point now, so… You should read it! But after you’ve read The Raven Boys! Don’t go starting in the midst of a series! EVER! The writing does get a little weird at times, but I think it’s a writing technique, and it doesn’t detract from the amazingness of the story enough to make it not worth reading! If you liked book 1, book 2 will only be a minor let down, and then you’ll get sucked into book 3 just like I am now! In fact, I am going to leave you to ponder over my review and leave me comments whilst I go read and then do algebra homework!

Beautiful Redemption by Kami Garcia After that amazingly epic creation that was Beautiful Chaos, I was really hoping for something equally as awesome. Beautiful redemption was good, but it was still a bit of a disappointment for me. It just seemed like maybe the authors were really sick and tired of the plot and characters and just wanted to end things now!

THE PERFECT BLEND: Name a book or series that is both bitter and sweet but ultimately satisfying.

The raven boys Ok so the whole entire Raven Cycle series is like too amazing to possibly be real. If you didn’t see yesterday’s review, just go read it, and it’ll maybe sum up my feelings for the first book. I’m on the last one now, and I’m still just as hooked as I was at the start! And I am hardcore shipping two characters that I thought I’d hate together before but now I may cry if they don’t kiss by the end of this! and i’m NOT telling you who they are unless you’ve already read the series!

I found this tag over on Kira’s Blog, and she tagged everybody, so I thought I’d give it a go! Kira has an awesome bookish blog, and you guys should really go check her out! And now… I have a feeling this is gonna be an extremely long post even by my standards, so let’s get started!

What was the last book you read?
Uhhh well… This is a scheduled post, but at the time of this writing, the last book I finished was Blue Lily, Lily Blue, which is the third book in The Raven cycle, (aka my current bookish obsession and the reason I am in total fangirl mode.)
Was it a good one?
YEEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!
What made it good?
EVERYTHING!!! Ok, ok… I guess if you made me pick one thing that made it awesome, I’d have to go with the characters. They’re just sO amazingly realistic and awesome and unique and mysterious and I LOVE all of them! But especially Ronan! I reeeeeeeally love Ronan! fangirls The writing is also amazing because their are four, sometimes five POV characters, and yet they’re all so unique that there isn’t any confusion over who’s speaking at any given moment. Let’s just say I’ve got a LOT to learn from Maggie Stiefvater about how to pull off multiple POV’s because I’m struggling with that right now!
Would you recommend it to other people?
Absolutely! You all just need to GO READ IT! actually you should all go read the whole Raven Cycle series because you simply cannot pick up the third book in a series without having read the two books prior to it! That’s like a major bookish crime and one that my little brother is guilty of! He won’t listen to me, but i have a feeling you share my opinion if you read my blog. 😉

What was the last bad book you read?
Ok… The term “bad” bugs me when it’s used to describe a book. There are good books, and there are not so good books, but any book deserves respect. With that out of the way, I’m going to say Born At Midnight, (Shadow Falls, Book 1), since I gave it two stars in my review.
What made you dislike it?
Ummmm… Just click here to read my review… Basically it was the writing, but I go WAY more in detail.
Do you wish to be a writer!
Yep! Just look at my blog name! Being a writer is my dream, and I’ll be bringing you all updates on my writing as I do NaNoWriMo this November. And btw… Ya know how I said I was starting a new project for NaNo since “Wishes” was too complicated to write like that? Yeah… I changed my mind again. The outline totally fell into place in my head, and now i cannot wait to write it for NaNoWriMo!
Has any book ever influenced you greatly?
Definitely! I’m not listing them all here though because that’d take forever…
Do you read fan fiction?
Sometimes… If I really like a series and want more from that world, I’ll read some fan fics for it. I think I’ve only ever really got hooked on fan fiction for Harry Potter, but The Raven Cycle may drive me to read more!
Do you write fan fiction?
When I write fan fiction, it’s usually only for a writing warm up for another project. Writing fan fiction for characters I know really well helps me understand things like plot and structure, and then I can apply that to my own work.
What’s your favorite book?
Really??? That’s like asking a mother to pick a favorite child! I’m gonna be predictable and say Harry Potter, but The raven King may be a close second. Can you tell I love The Raven Cycle yet? I will probably mention it about 50 more times in the remaining questions… Sorry!
What is your least favorite book?
Things fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is hands down the worst book I have EVER read! I had to read it for school, and I still don’t get it. I hate to down a book like that, but what even was the point of the plot? I passed my English class with the help of sparknotes.com!
Do you prefer physical books or reading on a device, like a Kindle?
Definitely eBooks! I’m a braille reader, and braille books are gigantic, so if I want floor space left over, I have to read eBooks! I mostly either read Kindle books on my iPad or listen to books from Audible.

I started learning to read braille when I was four, and I’ve been an avid reader ever since!

I honestly do not enjoy many books that are required for school, but i’m going to call this a tie between Tuck Everlasting, Number the Stars, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and To Kill A Mockingbird.

Book Review: The Raven Boys by Maggi stiefvater

My Thoughts: ☆☆☆☆☆

Can I just fangirl for a second? I waited a week before writing this review so maybe it might come out coherent, but no such luck! I am still not over the amazingness of this book, and I really hope I can do it justice! This is possibly the most well written book I have ever read that has more than two narrating characters! The narration alternates between four, sometimes five, characters, but there was NO confusion as to who the POV character was at any given time. And don’t let the blurb fool you! I thought it sounded like some fairytale knockoff at first, but I was WROOOOOOONG! The Raven Boys is one of the most original books I’ve ever read, and it’s so believable as you’re reading it that you get sucked into the story and you read 416 pages in two days like I did! How do I even communicate this? Let’s do an in depth analysis because this book deserves it!

The Writing:

The writing of this book is beautifully simple. To make a conflicting statement that probably won’t make sense to anybody but me, the writing is a form of showing by telling. You know how writers always end up in the “showing not telling debate?” This book does both and neither. The words are so intertwined that we’re told everything without really being told anything, and we’re shown everything, and told nothing at the same time. Yeah… I’m confused too, but you’ll get it if you read it! It’s very metaphorical and… fantasy like intone, but the words are simple enough that it doesn’t seem like that. It’s also not so simple that it seems like a book for younger readers, but not so overly metaphorical that you feel like you’re slogging through old English stuff either. Sorry to anyone who actually enjoys old English stuff and doesn’t have to slog through it. I wish I could be like you!

Character analysis:

Oh my gosh… The characters! They’re all so amazing and they feel so real and they’re all unique and I LOOOOOOOVE them! Let’s break it down before I go into hardcore fangirl mode… Blue Sargent: Blue seemed flat to me at first. I mean… That blurb put me off quite a bit from the get go. Killing her true love with a kiss? Yeah, no, NOT my style! But that’s not how Blue is AT ALL! She is eccentric, and weird, and cool, and sensible, and adventurous, and kind, and… generally an awesome character who isn’t like one of those characters who thinks she’s average but has every boy throwing themselves at her and can literally do anything she wants including fight off murderous bad guys with little to no training! She’s got an attitude, a strong set of morals, and the kind of mindset that doesn’t take nothing from nobody! Oh yeah! There’s also the fact that she acts like a kind of energetic battery for anything that can tap into it, including ghosts and her psychic family! How’s that for awesome and original?

Gansey: I do not care for Gansey’s character at this point in time. He just seems SO FAKE! But I also think he’s supposed to seem that way. and I have a sneaking suspicion that he and Blue are going to end up together at the end of this, and I reeeeeally don’t want that to happen unless he undergoes a MAJOR transformation! I like what he stands for, but can we please just drop the sixty-year-old politician act? That being said, he is very unique, and I can’t wait to uncover more of his past. I can’t tell why though because that would be a spoiler, and I refuse to spoil this book in the review even though I’m way late to reading this.

Adam: Where to start with Adam? Adam is… complicated. His story nearly made me cry, and I won’t tell you why for the same reason I won’t tell about Gansey. Let’s just say he’s had a rough home life, and no matter how much he wants to blend with the other Raven Boys, he just doesn’t. He’s different, strange, somehow more aware and yet unaware of the big picture. He’s the outsider of the group, but I think he’s got a part to play, and it’s gonna be a big one judging by the ending, which I won’t spoil.

Ronan: Can Ronan pleeeeease just come out of the pages so I can hug him and tell him everything is going to be ok even though things are probably going to be the polar opposite of ok?! I mean he’d probably just tell me to f* off, but I don’t really care! He try to be so strong, but really he’s a word away from falling apart. I have this thing for tragic heroes, and if Ronan doesn’t get his act together and do something amazing by the end of this series, I WILL cry.

Noah: Oh my gosh spoilers!!!! I must be careful. Noah isn’t actually there. He’s a “smudge,” to quote Gansey, just an imprint of something that once was. And that’s all you get on Noah, even though I had things half way figured out by the second time he was mentioned. Let’s see if you can get as close as I did! 😉

The Plot:

The beginning was SLOOOOOW… Stuff happened, and it was pretty big stuff, but the pacing was off. The writing made up for it though, and I am SO glad I stuck with it! After about… let’s say chapter 8ish, things got better, and better, and better… And that ending… That ending was epic! It was a total cliff hanger, but it was a good cliff hanger! When you read the last line, you will immediately want more! And it’ll be the good kind of wanting more, not the angry kind of wanting more that leaves you at a total complete loose end.

Final Thoughts:

You NEED to read this book! Just DO IT! And tell me what you think! The ending is slow, but you will NOT regret sticking with it! Here’s just one teaser quote for you from Ronan’s psychic reading… “A secret killed your father, and you know what it is.”

A goal without a plan is just a wish

It’s Fall, y’all! Yeah, I know it’s been Fall for a while now, but today it actually feels like Fall in my part of the world! It’s October 1st, exactly one month until NaNoWriMo, and I actually decided to be a productive human being over the weekend and make a schedule for school, writing, blogging, reading, and mindless entertainment time. Yeah, I’m shocked too! Anyway… Today I am bringing you a recap of everything I posted, some stuff that’s been going on with me, and upcoming stuff for October. Yes, I have posts for the next two months planned out in my notebook. I don’t know what alien creature took over my brain, but I think I like it. And just a heads up before I really begin this post, my blogging software has decided to act possessed today, and my ability to inserts headings and links properly is questionable at this time, so this could be interesting… I guess i’ll just put headings in all caps for now!

PERSONAL GOINGS ON:

The last two weeks have been nightmarish with school. Like the dagger and angry face emojis made it into my frequently used section. I’m not crazy, (it’s an inside joke), but that’s how bad it was. I won’t get into that right now because y’all really don’t wanna hear me rant, but just know that it involved three power points, a chemistry test, a teacher’s inability to modify assignments for me, eighty pages of reading, and algebra, and that is why I haven’t been blogging.

On a happier note, I’ve officially decided to do NaNoWriMo again this November! Someone prepare my room in the psych ward now please! I’m gonna try to write 50000 words on top of a packed school schedule! I know i probably won’t hit it, but I’m going to try, and even if I don’t, at least I’ll get to be part of an awesome community again for a month. I’m starting a completely new project because the one I’ve been sharing snippets from is very complex, and I really want to do it justice. If I make it my Nano project, I know I’ll fly through it, and then it’ll be a mess, and I’ll never edit it. It needs a really structured outline because of the way the plot is twisted together over a few generations, so I’m trying to develop that the right way first. I’m not really sure how to explain my new project yet, but i’ll probably be ready to do that for my Snippet Sunday post tomorrow. If any of you guys are also attempting NaNo this November, please give me a shout out in the comments! I need some fellow insane writing buddies! And if you’re a NaNoNewbie, I’d love to help you get started!

I found this tag over on Danielle’s blog, and she tagged everyone, so technically I’m tagged! I can’t resist a good book tag, and I thought this would be a great way for you to get to know me and my blogging habits a little better. And maybe I just needed a quick post…

The Questions:

Where do you typically write your blog posts?

I prefer to write my blog posts on my MacBook because I found blogging software that is super accessible to my screen-reader, plus I just love my Macbook, and I usually sit at my desk so I can connect a braille display and see all the crazy things that autocorrect comes up with. I have been known to type posts in the WordPress app on my phone and iPad if I’m on the go or just don’t want to put out the effort to get up and get my laptop. This post is being written on my bed because my wrists hurt from typing at my desk all day. And I don’t have a braille display connected, so please excuse my goofs! You probably don’t know what I’m talking about, but a braille display connected to my laptop is the equivalent of the screen for you, and without it I’m going on a computerized robot voice to pick out mistakes. I guess I could just go get the display, but who wants to move that much after Algebra and Chemistry homework? Not I! 😉

How long does it generally take you to write a book review?

Depends on the book and how in-depth I want to get with my ranting/fangirling. I can usually finish a review in less than two hours, and I think the longest I’ve spent on one was four hours. The hardest part for me is formatting all the links and headings and posts because I always have something to say about a book!

When did you start your book blog?

Hmmm… This is complicated… I started my first blog in April while I was doing CampNaNoWriMo, and it was more for writing related stuff than books. That blog was under an obscure URL so nobody ever found it, and I used my real name, which creeped me out a little when I started reviewing books and people started noticing. SO… I moved over to this blog in July of this year… I think.

What is the worst thing about having a book blog in your opinion?

Writing bad reviews is rough! I recently gave my first two star review, and that was hard to write! But I know that I appreciate honest book bloggers who have a mixture of good and not so great reviews on their sites, and I want to be one of those honest book bloggers.

What is the best thing about having a book blog in your opinion?

I love the community! I very rarely see negativity among book bloggers. that is, I don’t ever see people putting other people down just for the heck of it. I see some bad reviews, but those are all for the good of honest readership!

6. What blog post have you had the most fun writing so far?

Hmm… All of my blog posts are fun for me to write. I don’t write anything that isn’t fun to write, because if it isn’t fun to write, then it won’t be fun to read! That being said, I think my favorite posts are probably my review of Anna Dressed In Blood, or this Snippet Sunday.

7. When do you typically write?

For some reason the writerly part of my brain likes to not work until around 9 PM, so I end up writing into the night…

8. Do you review every book you read?

I have reviewed every book I’ve read since starting this blog. If I ever don’t finish a book, I most likely will not review it. I don’t like reading DNF reviews because if you don’t finish it, you can’t exactly judge it in it’s entirety. I may make a short note that I didn’t finish something on a wrap-up post, but I will not post a full review.

9. How do you write your book reviews? With a cup of coffee or tea? With Netflix? Cuddled with your fur baby?

Whenever I write anything, I will have a cup of coffee or tea, and also a glass of water because I try to balance caffeine intake with water. I sometimes have Netflix, (Supernatural), on for background noise, but usually it’s Pandora, Spotify, music from my iPod, or a youtube video. And my fur baby is currently confined to a cage because he decided to climb over something and cut his stomach open… He’s a big cuddly kitty by the name of JackO, (short for JackOLantern because he has big orange eyes that sometimes turn green.) No, I’m serious. My cat’s eyes change color. Tell me I’m not the only one with a freaky eye changing cat! Anyway… When he’s allowed to roam around, he usually sits in my lap and bats at the mouse pointer whilst I’m attempting to write.

10. When do you write your book reviews? Right after finishing a book? Two weeks after finishing a book?

I usually try to write my reviews the day after I finish the book so it’s still fresh on my mind, but I’m not still angry/sad/majorly obsessed with whatever I just read.

11. How often do you post?

Hahahahaha… I’m just gonna skip over this question… Jk! But seriously… I had a great posting schedule, and then school happened, and now things don’t happen on time! I’d like to post two or three times a week, but it’s usually more like once over the weekend. I’ve got some stuff scheduled though, so that should change!

Disclaimer, disclaimer! I am a self-proclaimed angel enthusiast! I love studying angel lore! Cheyenne Raphael is my pen name because Archangel Raphael is the angel of healing and the patron angel of the blind. Therefore, I had some angelic expectations upon opening this book!

I did really enjoy Angelfall, but it was also a bit of a let down for me. I’ll hit the high points first, and then I’ll get into the… not so great stuff. And we’re gonna do this in bullet point form today because I have to do chemistry homework after this is over… Yay me…

The Awesome Stuff!

Penryn Young is a total badass! Like she is awesome, and I love her sarcastic attitude, and we would either be best friends or one of us would kill the other! I’d probably be the one to die…
Penryn’s Mom has paranoid schizophrenia, and it is portrayed very well. I love books with mentally ill characters that aren’t just there for the sake of having mentally ill characters! Like she’s crazy, and that’s a problem, but it’s also not a problem, and that’ll make more sense when you actually read it… Maybe…
There are angels! And they’re actually real angels mentioned in the lore! Sort of…
Penryn’s little sister is wheel chair bound, which is awesome because I don’t see many books with wheel chair bound characters! I have NO idea if it’s a good portrayal of a wheel chair bound character because obviously I’ve never experienced that. It could be totally stereotypical like most blind characters in YA literature, but it seemed pretty darn good to me, and the fact that we had a schizophrenic character and a character in a wheel chair in the same book is awesome! (someone please tell me if this is a good wheel chair bound character because now I really wanna know…)
The plot keeps you on your toes! In fact, it kept me up until midnight trying to finish it… And I had to do Algebra the next day… That went well! Not!
I was really able to get into Penryn’s head and connect with her character. The writing style and POV made that really easy, and it was literally an emotional rollercoaster!
I listened to the audio book, and the narrator was amazing!!! That has absolutely nothing to do with anything unless you love audio books like I do, so just go with it if you don’t….

The Not So Great Stuff:

The angels are… interesting. I guess I didn’t really expect it to follow the lore exactly, but I didn’t expect them to be kinda warped either. And… There’s some stuff in there that bugs me about the whole God/angel connection thing. You’ll get it when you read it…
The romance aspect seems kinda silly to me! Like… It’s not very believable! I get that it’s fantasy, but usually I can suspend my disbelief and become absorbed in the story enough to believe anything, and that didn’t happen with this relationship! I can’t say anymore for fear of spoilers, so just see for yourself!
Why does every chapter end with a massive cliff hanger?! That’s cool sometimes, but it got old after about the first five times it happened. I’m the kind of person who can’t stand to stop anywhere other than a chapter break, and those, “whose gonna die?!” cliff hangers were making it reeeeeally hard to find a good place to stop and sleep! Hence the midnight reading…
The writing was a little overdone in some places. I noticed it mainly with dialogue and descriptions, which is something I notice a lot because I have to watch it in my own writing. I mean… We get that the city is in ruin; you don’t have to tell us fifty-two thousand times! And the dead body description is making me sick…
Why are there suddenly creepy alien monsters being created in an angelic science lab? Where did that even come from? Is that just there for a weird plot twist to keep people up reading late and give them nightmares, or is it going to mean something later? Ok… It did mean something, but it was just a little shocking, and nothing really lead up to that. I had this whole elaborate plot worked out in my head the way I would have written it, and then it all crumbled to the ground with freaky stuff that seemed like it didn’t belong. We already had demons, and then these weird, creepy, SciFi monsters took over the plot and i didn’t see their connection to the previously mentioned demons!
What is with that ending?! It just stopped suddenly, and nothing really came to any kind of close! I get that there are more books in the series, but even though it is a series, it needs some kind of closure or else it’s gonna drive me insane! And not the good kind of insane that makes me want to keep reading! That goes back to the massive cliff hangers getting old after a while…

Final thoughts:

I liked Angelfall, and I will probably finish the series, but the other books got shoved further down my TBR list after reading the ending. I wasn’t impressed with the ending, and endings are the one way for a writer to hold my trust. If you can’t write a good ending, I won’t trust you to write a good series. That’s ironic since I struggle with endings myself, but it’s just how I am! The cliff-hanger chapters threw me off too. I like short chapters, and I don’t mind cliff-hangers at all, but we don’t need a giant cliff-hanger to end every chapter. Sometimes it is perfectly ok to write a small cliff-hanger that doesn’t immediately threaten anyone’s life. I did really like Penryn’s character, and her and her sister are honestly probably the only reason I plan to continue the series. I thought I’d like it for the angels, but they’re just weird… Angels shouldn’t be weird!

Like Anna Dressed In Blood, Girl Of Nightmares is seriously creepy! Like don’t read it at night creepy! But the creepiness is toned down quite a lot in the second book. Anna Dressed In Blood gets a ten out of ten on Cheyenne’s scale of creepy, and Girl Of nightmares is somewhere around an eight. It may actually be the same level of creepy, but it’s a different kind of creepy. I’ve said the word creepy WAY too many times in that paragraph, so I think I’ll move on now!

I will admit that Girl Of Nightmares was a bit of a let down for me as far as plot and structure, but it still maintained the realistic characters that I fangirled over in book1. I’m a sucker for awesome characters, so that’s why I’m giving it four stars. Anna Dressed In Blood had a very tight plot structure, along with the realistic characters, and the end of the book left the readers wanting something more. Girl Of nightmares was that something more, but it wasn’t quite the tightly woven something more I was hoping for.

The main problem that I had with it was the romance subplot, and the ending. The subplot kind of seemed to me like it was just there for the sake of having a subplot with romantic issues, and the ending was just a little… anticlimactic. I mean… We went through all this stuff, and traveled half way across the world, and now it’s just gonna end, and everybody’s just gonna walk off into the sunset in a cloud of rainbows and butterflies! That might be a little exaggerated, but that’s what it seemed like to me. And ok! I have to add a spoiler because I have feelings!

Spoiler, Spoiler!!!

The whole break up thing with Thomas and Carmel… What on earth was that about?! I mean I get what it was about, and it totally made sense, but it just seemed a little down played/way over done to me! That was a conflicting statement, but it’s true! It was kind of taking over at first, and then it kind of got dropped, and then she showed up in England, and then it was all better! I guess I just think it could’ve been done better, but it’s nothing to stop anyone from reading the book.

End Of Spoiler!!!

In short, Girl Of Nightmares is an awesome book with a few minor plot problems that bug my writerly brain more than they probably should. It definitely shows Kendare Blakes amazing characters, and the writing style is very true to the series. It was a bit disappointing after the tight structure of the first book, but it isn’t enough to make me drop the series if a third book is released.

Ok… This is rough… I am giving my first public two star rating! But I feel it’s warranted, and I’ll explain why!

Born At Midnight really does not have the best writing in the world. Maybe I’m a hard critic since I’m an aspiring author who loves to pick apart writing, but it just seemed to me like the whole flow of the words needed a couple more rounds of edits before it hit the market! It certainly wasn’t horrible, and it definitely shouldn’t make you not read the book. It just seemed to me like the writing style was… let’s go with simplified. By that I mean that the writing style made it seem like the book was meant for middle grade readers, but there was some content in there that definitely was NOT meant for middle grade minds! It really just did NOT blend well, and it got my attention enough for me to mention it here. There were also a few descriptions of character actions, dialogue, and body language that just didn’t seem right. I was cringing a bit whilst reading it because it was just SO awkward for the characters involved in the scene that the awkwardness carried over to me… I mean, there is a certain degree of awkward that is good to have in a book, BUT come on… Enough’s enough! This kiss is getting gross and will probably be the thing that makes the two kissers avoid each other for the next thirty pages! And I’m blushing! Yeah, that’s another thing. The romance is a little weird, and it kinda takes over the plot a little instead of being just a subplot, but I think it might shape up to be better in the next book. I don’t care about your guy troubles; I care about figuring out what on earth you are so I can get on with my life!

WOW! That came out harsh! I’m going to reiterate that the writing should not stop you from picking up this book after reading my review, and that I am somewhat of a hard critic when it comes to writing style and words. I also listened to the audio book, so it tends to really draw my attention to writing style issues when I hear the words rather than reading them myself. I reeeeeally like where the plot is going, and I will honestly probably finish the series because I want to know how it ends. To me, it kind of seems like one of those pointless but ridiculously entertaining TV shows that you turn on for mindless entertainment after a long day.

I do like the characters a lot! They aren’t your stereotypical vampires, witches, werewolves, shifters, and fairies. There’s a really cool spin on some of them, and I want to find out how they develop over the course of the series. The main character seems a bit flat to me, but that goes back to the writing. The whole point of the book is that the main character gets sent off to this camp for supernatural creatures, and everybody knows what type of creature they are except for her. She sees ghosts, which really resonates with me, but she isn’t quite like the other creatures who see ghosts. She’s trying to determine her identity, and I love that theme. I have the other audio books, and I am planning to finish them, mostly because of that addictive TV show vib I mentioned! The plot did thicken at the end thankfully, so that’s enough to keep me going. Hopefully the writing will improve too, and I’ll be sure to post my reviews!

The Reader Confession Tag

Hey bookworms! At long last, (after I remembered that I forgot to add this to the todo list), I bring you the reader confession tag! Much thanks to The Quirky Book Nerd for tagging me! You guys should really go check out her blog because she is awesome, and I am sorry for forgetting to add this to a todo list so I’d actually remember to do it in a timely manor… School ruins everything!!! 😤

Anyway… It is now time to spill all of my bookish confessions onto a screen for the entire internet to see! Well… Ok… So in actuality it’ll only be the tiny corner of the internet that reads this blog, but it was a lot funner, (more fun???), to write the first time!

1. Have you ever damaged a book?

Not that I can remember… I read mostly eBooks, so those are kinda hard to damage! 😄

2. Have you ever damaged a borrowed book?

I am absolutely sure that I have never damaged a borrowed book!

3. How long does it take you to read a book?

Umm… It depends on the book, my schedule, what’s around to distract me, and whether we’re talking about actually reading a book or listening to it… I’m blind as a bat and read braille, so reading that way I can finish a 350-500 page book in 3 or 4 days if I really enjoy it. Now… By the end of the school day, I am usually SO sick of the feeling of braille dots, and my fingers and arms are tired from moving across a display and being raised up on my desk that the idea of touching my BrailleSense to read one more word makes me want to scream. Therefore, I have mostly been listening to audio books or having Voice Dream Reader read stuff to me. When I do that, I can finish a 350-500 page book in 2 days or so.

4. Books that you haven’t finished?

Twilight

Vampire academy

I’m sure some of you are screaming at me right now, but I didn’t make it through the first Twilight book, and I will NOT be finishing the Vampire Academy series. I think I made it to the third book in that one before I decided I just couldn’t take it any longer. I’m sure there are a couple other books that I haven’t finished, but those two are the ones that stand out.

5. Hyped/popular books you didn’t like?

Red Queen

You mean other than Twilight? Cause I reeeeeally cannot stand Twilight! I guess Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard is the most recent. I’ll be reviewing that series soon so you can see all my wonderful thoughts!

6. Is there a book you wouldn’t tell anyone you were reading?

I will read whatever I wanna read, and if you’ve got a problem with it, you can just get over it! I do NOT value your opinion of what I’m reading, unless you wanna talk bookworm stuff! Then feel free to express your opinion! 😜

How many books to you own?

Well my Kindle library says 550, but I’ve got WAY more than that in other eBook formats that don’t show me a nice statistics screen.

Are you a fast reader or a slow reader?

I’m really fast among braille readers, but I have no idea how that stacks up in sightling terms! I keep up with my sighted classmates ok, so I’m just gonna say I’m a fast reader and call it good…. 😆

The raven boys

Ok first of all, this is a horrible question and will probably give me nightmares tonight! Harry Potter was the first thing that came to mind, but that answer is probably way over used… So I’m going with The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater! It’s my current obsession, (review coming shortly), and I think I could read it again and again and still get something new out of it every time!
